Buying a mattress today is far more complex than it was in your parents’ time. Like almost every other aspect of your life, technology has come to the world of mattresses and to our Knoxville mattress store. No longer do you only have a choice of coil spring mattresses. Today there are mattresses made of memory foam, latex, pocketed innerspring, gel, and hybrids of different types of foam. There are air chamber beds, smart beds, and more. Even the coil spring mattress has been touched by new technology.
An Improvement on an Old Friend
Many of us grew up sleeping on an innerspring mattress, but nothing like those made today. Pocketed innerspring mattresses use coils that are individually wrapped for added support. They come with different diameters of coil to vary the amount of support in different areas of the mattress to help the bed contour more accurately to your body for more comfort.
Memory Foam Mattresses
One of the newer trends seen when buying a mattress is the memory foam mattress. Based on materials developed for NASA, these mattresses use a viscoelastic foam that literally shapes to your body when you lay down. They tend to “sleep warm” and make it difficult to move around when you are asleep.
The Latex Mattress
Latex mattresses make use of either petroleum-based or naturally occurring latex rubber in the main support system or the upholstery layers. Some use latex in both. The gel helps to keep the bed and, of course, anyone sleeping in it, cooler. Unlike memory foam, latex does not trap you in place; the foam flexes to conform to your body but not so deeply that you can’t move.
The Hybrid Mattress
Hybrid mattresses make use of more than one type of foam to provide the support you need. The combination could include any type of foam, including memory, latex, or gel and can be manufactured using different densities to provide the right amount of support.
The Air Chamber Bed
Today’s airbeds use multiple air chambers covered with padding and upholstery to create a bed that can be infinitely adjusted to suit your sleep needs. Most offer dual controls so that each person can set the firmness of their side of the bed to match their needs.
The Smart Bed
The smart bed is, in essence, taking the airbed to an all new level. Inside the chambers are several sensors that are connected wirelessly to control pads (one for each side). Far from being a simple control that lets you use the built-in pumps to inflate or deflate your side of the bed, these are more like computer tablets. They record how you sleep, monitor pressure points, and give you daily reports. More importantly, these systems are smart enough to be able to continuously monitor you while you sleep and make changes to the pressure as needed to give you the best night’s sleep.
